U.S. pressures revive Mideast indirect talks with dim prospects for progress

Pressures and assurances from the United States helped revive the long-delayed indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinians on Sunday, but the road ahead is expected to be bumpy, analysts say.
Chief Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat said Sunday the U.S.-proposed indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinians have formally started.Later on the same day, U.S. State Department commended the two parties for their efforts to create a "conducive" atmosphere for the talks to resume.
What brought together the two archrivals-for-decades to make their first peace contact in more than a year was U.S. pressures and assurances, an analyst said.
"It seems that the Israelis have agreed to be more discreet about new construction in East Jerusalem. They will not do new construction in East Jerusalem that will cause embarrassment or distress for the Palestinians and the United States," Michele Dunne, a Middle East expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told Xinhua.
In March, Israel announced plans to build 1,600 houses in a disputed area in East Jerusalem, triggering angry responses from the United States and the pullout from the indirect talks by the Palestinian side. The U.S. has since been pressuring Israel to refrain from making more provocative moves.Where will life take you?
